Jay Rodriguez opened the scoring for Southampton (42), giving them a 1-0 lead just before the break.

Nathan Redmond continued his excellent debut season for the Saints (57), doubling their advantage.

It was a nervy finish for the visitors though, with Patrick Bamford heading his first Premier League goal (72).

Mixed Season

The Saints have had a reasonably mixed season, that result ensures they remain in 9th place.

Their record in the last six has been poor, with one win, two draws and three defeats.

They have a very realistic chance of catching West Brom, who are now level on points with them on 45.

An 8th placed finish would be an excellent achievement for Puel, along with the runners-up medal in the EFL Cup.
