Euro 2016

England v Russia

England begin their campaign today against a fairly average Russia team and will hope to get off to a flying start with three points. If they did manage to do that it would be the first time they have ever won their first group match of a European Championships.

If the various reports in the media are to be believed it appears that Hodgson is falling into the same trap as previous managers, not picking the form players and playing them in their proper positions. I hope this is isn't the case but will fear the worst if it is.

Regardless of team selection, if England play anywhere near their best they should have too much for this Russian team and they do have real game changers on the bench in Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy. Vardy have been in outstanding form all season and Sturridge showed in the Europa League final that he can score goals from absolutely nothing, so they both bring something different to the table.

I can see this being a relatively tight affair with maybe only a goal separating the two teams, and given England's defensive frailty. Therefore I really like the bet of an England win and both teams to score at 9/2.

Wales v Slovakia

Wales begin against a reasonable looking Slovakia team and a win here would be an amazing start for them and give them an excellent chance to qualify for the knockout stages. As usual a lot of rely on the abilities of Gareth Bale so he will be a marked man. That could leave space for Aaron Ramsey to break late for deep area which he is so good at for Arsenal and he is capable of getting a few goals.

This is another match that I can see being really close and I fancy the draw here in what would be an acceptable start for both teams.
