Manchester United's Final Premier League Position: 6th

This Premier League Review sees Manchester United's season assessed, ultimately it is a season that has seen them win two trophies.

United came into the season on the back of a fifth-placed finish, narrowly missing out on the Champions League on goal difference.

It was a season that under Louis Van Gaal that saw United regress, with a lack of goals and home wins doing for the Dutchman.

The challenge for United this season was to return to their traditions, by playing an attacking style and competing for the top titles once again.

There were huge question marks over whether Mourinho could deliver on the style front, he has struggled to break the shackles.

This season was always going to be tough, with Mourinho pitting his wits against the likes of Klopp, Guardiola, Wenger, Conte and Mauricio Pochettino.

Ultimately though it is an excellent debut season, with the Portuguese winning two trophies and securing a seat at the top table of European football.

Great Start

United enjoyed a good start to the season, winning their opening three matches in some style.

Defeats against Guardiola's City and a surprise defeat against Watford put paid to that good work though.

They played an incredible 63 games this season, with extended runs in the League Cup and Europa League.

Their league form will be the biggest issue for Mourinho, to finish sixth with their spend is poor for the club.

They lost the same amount of fixtures as the Champions, but they have drawn more games than anyone in the League.

United finished bottom of the top six mini-league, with just one win against top six opposition.

They finished 24 points behind Antonio Conte's side, with the 15 drawn matches hurting Mourinho's men.

Cup Success

United managed to win both the League Cup & Europa League, both of these the first of the post-Ferguson era.

They managed to beat two excellent sides in the finals, beating Southampton and Ajax respectively.

It's a perfect springboard for Mourinho, with the winning mentality firmly back at Manchester United now.

Top Stats

Zlatan Ibrahimovic enjoyed an incredible season, ending the club's top Premier League scorer with 17 goals.

Ander Herrera has emerged as an excellent midfield general with the most assists (6), tackles (84) and interceptions (81).

Marouane Fellaini won the most aerial battles, but also had the worst disciplinary record with nine yellows and one red card.

Their final points tally was 69, that was 3 points better than last season, despite finishing one place lower.

Overall it's an excellent season, but the Premier League position must improve dramatically next season.

Transfer Speculation

Mourinho will be looking to add quality to his side, he will be looking to completely change the mentality in some sections of the United dressing room.

They have been linked with several huge players, with Rodriguez, Bale, Ronaldo, Perisic and many others.

United will need to have a balanced approach with their squad, cutting out the rubbish and bringing in quality.

Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling have been linked with exits, along with captain Wayne Rooney.
