Middlesbrough's Final Premier League Position: 19th
This Premier League Review sees Middlesbrough's season assessed, with the Teessiders losing their Premier League status.
Middlesbrough came into this campaign with an excellent reputation, having gained automatic promotion to the Premier League under Spaniard Aitor Karanka.
They made some excellent early acquisitions, with the arrival of Alvaro Negredo a huge statement of intent on the part of Middlesbrough.
Unfortunately for Karanka despite an excellent start he was relieved of his duties midway through the season, he has eventually been replaced by Garry Monk.
Ultimately the season has been hugely disappointing, they failed to stay in the league but they will be able to make a title challenge in the Championship.
Tough Start
Middlesbrough had a steady and unbeaten start to the season, winning one match and drawing their other two during the month of August.
They followed that up with four Premier League defeats and two draws, until they beat Bournemouth 2-0 in October.
Boro won just two more games in 2016, coming against Hull and Swansea both sides that were struggling.
They lost 20 matches in total, but it was the 13 draws that prevented them from remaining in the league.
Karanka's side scored just 27 goals all season, this was by far the lowest in the league and along with poor results contributed to the Spaniard's dismissal.
They registered just 5 wins all season and finished 12 points behind Watford who finished 17th.
They finished 65 points behind Antonio Conte's side, an enormous gulf in class between the sides at the top and bottom of the league.
Cup Failures
Middlesbrough exited the EFL Cup at the first time of asking, losing to a promising Fulham side 2-1.
They did reach the FA Cup Quarter Finals though, losing 2-0 at home against Manchester City.
Their main aim was to move the club forward, on the evidence of league and cup performances this season has been a failure for Middlesbrough.
Top Stats
Alvaro Negredo ended as the club's top Premier League scorer, with the Spanish International scoring 9 goals and registering four assists.
The Spaniard had an outstanding season winning the most aerial battles (175) and the most shots (69).
Ben Gibson had the most clearances (234), and the most passes (1682).
Adam Clayton won the most tackles (79) and had the most interceptions (66).
Their final points tally was 28, that was 12 points behind Watford who finished 17th in the PL.
Transfer Speculation
Garry Monk has been appointed as the new Middlesbrough manager, appointing a manager with an excellent reputation in the league after his time at Leeds.
Monk will have a tough task on his hands, with the Championship a tough league but they have kept the majority of their squad.
They have already signed four players with Britt Assombalonga, Martin Braithwaite, Cyrus Christie and Jonny Howson.
Despite being relegated the club are in an excellent position, the signings and managerial appointment the club have made prove they are committed to bouncing back immediately.
