Watford's Final Premier League Position: 17th
This Premier League Review sees Watford's season assessed, with the Hornets securing their Premier League status.
Walter Mazzarri came into the club on the back of a successful season under his predecessor Quique Sanchez Flores, the club did not renew his contract though.
The Italian came into the club with an impressive CV, managing Inter Milan, Sampdoria and Napoli but this was his first Premier League assignment.
Mazzarri's time at the Hornets won't be regarded as a success, the clubs owners were looking to move up the table, during his tenure they dropped four places.
Ultimately the season has been hugely disappointing, they have stayed in the league but have played some poor football and moved down the table.
Tough Start
Watford endured a tough start to the season, they failed to win a game in the month of August losing three and drawing one.
They followed that up with two excellent wins against West Ham and Manchester United, but lost to Burnley at Turf Moor.
Only four teams scored less goals than them in the league, with Burnley and the three relegated sides those below them.
They lost 20 matches in total, that was the fourth highest in the league, overall their defence was really poor.
All of the sides around them will be looking to strengthen during the summer, it is vital that the Hornets do the same.
Watford registered 11 wins during the course of the season, with those last two wins ultimately securing their place in the league.
They finished 53 points behind Antonio Conte's side, an enormous gulf in class between the sides at the top and bottom of the league.
Cup Failures
Watford have had a poor run in the cups this season, losing to Gillingham at home in the first round of the EFL Cup.
They exited the FA Cup at the second time of asking, losing 1-0 away against Millwall.
Their main aim was to move the club forward, on the evidence of league and cup performances this season has been a complete failure for Watford.
Top Stats
Troy Deeney ended as the club's top Premier League scorer, with the club captain scoring 10 goals and winning the most aerial battles (192).
Deeney also had the most assists (4), level with Jose Holebas.
Etienne Capoue also had an outstanding season coming runner-up in goals scored (7), whilst registering the most passes (1483), the most shots (50) and most interceptions (59).
Sebastien Prodl had the most clearances (183) and Valon Behrami had the most tackles (73).
Their final points tally was 40, that was 6 points clear of the relegation zone and enough to secure Premier League survival.
Transfer Speculation
Marco Silva has been appointed as the new Watford manager, with the Portuguese impressing during his short stint at Hull.
He will have a hard job on to continue Watford's progression, despite their poor season.
They have already made four signings with Daniel Bachmann, Nathan Chalobah, Kiko Femenia and Will Hughes.
There will be renewed optimism at the club, they already have some excellent players and Silva will believe he can get the best out of them.
