Newcastle face Tottenham at St. James Park on Sunday afternoon, on the opening weekend of the 2017/18 Premier League season.

The Magpies come into this match in good form, winning their last game against Hellas Verona 2-0.

Ayoze Perez (4) opened the scoring early on for the Magpies, with the highly rated Spaniard completing an excellent move.

Christian Atsu (12) made it 2-0 just eight minutes later, with the former Chelsea man tapping in from close range.

Newcastle had plenty of other chances to extend their lead prior to the break, with Ritchie, Mitrovic and Shelvey coming close.

There were no further incidents during the second half, leaving the Magpies to secure a comfortable home win.

It will be a tough season for Rafa Benitez, with the club being promoted as Champions from the Championship.

They have yet to make any flagship signings but they have had a very strong squad in the Championship.

Of all the promoted sides Newcastle has the best chance of staying up, with an excellent squad and manager.

This opening fixture will be a huge challenge, with Tottenham having two brilliant seasons under Pochettino.

Newcastle come into this match as underdogs, with Mauricio Pochettino's side overwhelming favourites for this match.

Rafa Benitez will be looking for the perfect start to Newcastle's Premier League campaign, despite it being a tough opening assignment.

The Magpies did the Premier League double over Newcastle in the 2015/16 season.

Spurs come into this match on the back of a 2-0 win against Juventus, an impressive result for Pochettino's side.

Harry Kane opened the scoring for Tottenham (10), with the header from a Kieran Trippier cross.

Christian Eriksen (52) doubled Spurs' advantage in the second half, with Deli Alli expertly assisting the Denmark international.

That was an excellent win against a strong Juventus side, ideal preparation for a tough Premier League season.

 

Success Needed

Tottenham had an excellent campaign last season, with Pochettino's men the only team that pushed Chelsea all the way.

Spurs have yet to spend a single penny, the only transfer activity has been the sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City.

Danny Rose has come out on the eve of the season, stating his desire to leave the club for their rivals United and Chelsea.

They had the best starting XI in the Premier League last season, they need to identify squad players to complete their team.

Spurs Favourites

Mauricio Pochettino's side come into this match as favourites, they are one of the front runners for the title as well.

This will be an ideal start for Spurs, with newly promoted Newcastle yet to find their feet in the Premier League.

Tottenham will be looking to make it 59 wins in 134 matches against the Magpies.
