Today is Coral Eclipse day at Sandown and although it’s a disappointingly small field it has some high quality horses. The obvious starting point is the outstanding Derby winner Golden Horn. He was a brilliant Dante winner at York before following that up with another virtuoso display to again beat stable companion Jack Hobbs into second place. Jack Hobbs has since franked that form with a comfortable win in the Irish Derby.
The Grey Gatsby is a horse that I really like and won the Dante, the Irish Derby and the Irish Champion Stakes as a three year old. He was also incredibly unlucky to be beaten a short head by Free Eagle at Ascot recently. Twice around the bend he was short of room and in the home straight Jamie Spencer was unable to find a gap quickly enough. Another few yards and he was surely the winner. However, as Golden Horn gets the three year olds weight allowance, it would take an almighty performance from The Grey Gatsby to give 11lbs away to such a high class horse.
Of the remainder, Cougar Mountain ran an excellent race in the Queen Anne Stakes, this is an extra two furlongs though so he is entering unknown territory. Western Hymn and Tullius complete the line-up and both would prefer a little rain to arrive.
Due to the weight allowance Golden Horn is an unattractive 4/11 to win. However, Coral have an excellent offer for new customers of 5/1 on Golden Horn (max bet £5). That looks a perfect chance to grab an easy £25 to me. Please see the link below to grab this offer.
