Wimbledon Day Eight

Maria-Sharapova

Day eight of Wimbledon sees us move onto the Women's quarter finals. Sharapova has looked in great form so far in the tournament and is yet to even look like dropping a set. She should prove far too strong for the American Coco Vandeweghe who is currently the world No. 47. Coco did have an excellent win in the fourth round against Safarova but the power of Sharapova will be too much for her in my opinion.

Serena was extremely fortunate to come through against Heather Watson after being three love down in the final set. However, I think this will have galvanised her and I fancy her to have a much easier match against Azarenka. She was certainly comfortable enough taking care of her sister Venus in straight sets.

Both Sharapova and Williams are plenty short enough in the outright match betting, however I am going with a straight sets win double which pays around 2.62.

Tour de France Update

It's still early on in the race but today was an excellent day for our main bet - Froome to win the overall classification. He finished second in the third stage today which put him in the yellow jersey for tomorrow's stage. More importantly he gained time on his main rivals. Froome is now best priced 6/5 from an initial 2/1.

Tomorrow's stage will be hard work as parts of it go across the cobbles which are notoriously tough, especially if there is any rain. Nibali and his team are masters across the cobbles so he will be hoping he can eat into Froome's lead on this stage. However, if Team Sky can negotiate this stage successfully then it will set Froome up perfectly for when they enter the mountains later on in the race.

Peter Sagan has started off reasonably well so our double of Froome and Sagan for the yellow and green jerseys respectively has still got a decent shot.

Pontefract

The racing isn't anything special today but there is one running at Pontefract that I think will take all the beating in a Listed race there. Roger Charlton's Temtress was only beaten a neck by GM Hopkins in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot. She is stepping up a level here but is lightly raced and anything close to her previous run gives her a great chance.

Today's bets

Sharapova and Williams to win in straight sets - 1 point double @ 2.62 (Paddy Power)

Pontefract 15:10 Temptress - 1 point win @ 11/8 (Skybet)

The Ashes start tomorrow so we will have a preview and some selections for what should be a cracking series.
